I am sorry, I really dont see how the WETN improves gameplay. There is probably a big sign "TRADE HERE" in the middle of the ocean too. Maybe even huge warehouses where all the goods are stored. Small piece of land where merchants can stand on, pointing in the direction the ships need to go. Trade nodes return in Total War: Shogun 2, operating in a near-identical fashion to previous iterations. All ships trading with eachother, or stealing trade from other ships. The same is true for Bordeaux and London. France for example does not have provinces in Sevilla, so will always be at a disadvantage against Spain or Portugal. Yes, nations could (and still can, except for Sevilla) already 'steal' trade from your home node, but it was/is a lot more difficult. They can do that, without having colonies, they just need a big fleet. But where is the fun when you steer trade all the way from India or China, into the WETN, where everyone else can just steal it from you? They just have to park a huge fleet, have lots of provinces and BAM! all you hard work gets stolen.
